Introduction
Azhvars are those
who immerse themselves in the innumerable divine qualities of the supreme lord
called as ananthan (one without an end).
In the previous paasuram, there appeared a context of beauty so
immediately peyazhvar’s mind jumped into the divine ocean of the lords’s
beauty. Azhvar thereby tries to control
his thirst to enjoy the divine beauty by talking about the colour, action, feet
and what not as everything is absolute beauty when associated with the lord.
Commentary
(AzhiyArkku
Azhineer vaNNam azhagandRE) First azhvar talks about the ocean colored
beautiful lord who holds a divine discus in his divine hands. That beauty mesmerizes azhvar. Is there a necessity for any other dressing
when the lord with his natural beauty stands holding the beautiful discus?
(azhagandRE aNdam
kadaththal) “sa bhoomim vishvathO vruthvA
athyadishta dashAn kulam” (pu. Sk) [ He measured the earth fully and further
proceeded to measure more] Though mAvali ruled over only the 3 worlds, due
to his greatness, the lord who is the savior of the whole universe, not
stopping with measuring the worlds he measured even his divine abode with the
third step not reachable by anyone without his sankalpa.
“Eththa Ezhulagum koNda kOlak kooththan” [thiruvai 2-2-11]. As per nammazhvar words the whole act of the lord is like a well
trained dancer expressing the emotions and situations in the most appropriate
manner beautifully.
(angai neer
ERRARukku) “alanpurindha neduntadakkai”
[thirunedu 6]. The lord is used to
give till the person who accepts the same says “enough enough (alam alam)” with
his beautiful hands but now He is standing in front of mahabali like a beggar.
(alarmElOn
kAlkazhuva) brahma who came out of the lord’s divine navel washed the lord
trivikrama’s divine feet
(gangai neer
kAndRa kazhal azhagandRE) when brahma washed the divine feet of the lord it
came down to the earth as the river gangus that purified siva and others on the
way. Were the divine feet just pure?
“mEl nindRa visumbil veN tugil kodiyena virindhu valantharu maNi
neer gangai” [periya thirumozhi 1-4-3] In the sky the gangus was spread like a
beautiful white flag and adding to the beauty was the lord’s lotus feet. What can be told about this divine beauty!

What is azhvar trying to say from this paasuram?
Everyone talks about his
colour and calls him “kadalvaNNan” like any other name without rejoicing the
beauty and everyone elaborates on his action of measuring the worlds
(concentrating on his strength and supremacy) but not enjoying the beauty of
the Lord posing like the trained dancer, and also about giving the divine gangus
to this world (meditating on its purity) but the most important is enjoying the
divine beauty in all His divine actions. [Translator’s note: “madurAthipathE
akilam madhuram” anything related to Him is divine.] Shouldn’t one just immerse
in this divinity and freeze in love towards that ultimate beauty?
