Introduction

 For the upliftment of the jeevatmas, emperuman never stops with the efforts that has already been stated but continues to do many more unimaginable things.  Then shouldn’t we put our small efforts to experience that emperuman instructs azhvar to his mind;

 Commentary

 (nenjE muyandRu thozhu) Oh My mind! (under my control) Emperuman has been doing so many things for our benefit for many many years.  You also try to do your little mite to surrender to His divine feet. Further, azhvar recollects one of the great endeavors of emperuman.

(moorineer vElai eyandRa maraththAlilaiyin mElAl) On top of the ocean, with splashing waves, on a small tender banyan leaf unaffected and well settled;

 (payindRa) reclined on it for quite some time;

 (angu) in that place, that surprises even intellectuals like azhvars “balan thanaturuvAi….” (mudal thiruvandhadhi 69)

 (maN nalamkoL veLLaththu) on that destructive waters, ready to engulf the earth (place where all the jeevatmas enjoy all pleasures (bhogyam), that which has the objects of pleasure (bhoga upakaranam) and the place required for enjoying (bhoga sthanam));

 (Or mAya kuzhaviyAi) He didn’t allow His property on the earth to get destroyed instead safely protected everything in His small stomach and reclined like a small child; His agadithagatana samarthyam, to make the impossible possible;

 (thaNNalangal mAlaiyAn) Even at that time, decorated with cool, moving garland;

 (thAn muyandRu thozhu nenjE) That emperuman, who has done such divine feats for our sake, His divine feet don’t ignore or neglect.  But hold on with great enthusiasm oh my mind!

EidhAn marAmaram Ezhum ErAmanAi

Thennilangai kOn veezha sendRu kuraluruvAi
Munnilam kaikoNdAn muyandRu.

nilam kai koNdAn – captured His land back;

 Introduction

 Unable to come out of Rama’s divine pastimes which is life giving to anyone (mruthasanjeevanam) azhvar continues to elaborate more on Rama’s activities and stresses on His upayabhava (being the means)

Commentary

 (ErAmanAi marAmaram Ezhum Eidhan) That sarvaloka pitha (father of all worlds, universal creator) aspiring to become the son of a jeevatma created by Him, became chakravarthi thirumagan (son of the chakravarthi, Dasaratha) showed His easy accessibility by joining with the vanaras (monkey clan) and to create trust in sugreeva with a single arrow pierced through 7 trees.

(EndhizhaikAi ammAn maRiyai EidhAn) Immersed in the love of piratti, shot the arrow on the small/magical deer not even thinking if it is worth to be hit with such a powerful Rama Bana (Divine arrow of Rama) says Periyavachan pillai;

Appillai comments – Instead of ‘maRiyai’ if taken as ‘maRiya’; Immeresed in the beauty of piratti decorated with beautiful jewels like a normal human He shot the arrow in a way that the deer toppled and fell down.

 (EndhizhaikkAi eidhadhuvum thennilangai kOn veezha) for releasing piratti from the clutches of rAvana, He showered arrows on beautiful lanka in the southern direction and made rAvana fall to the ground like a smashed small wall.

 So, when it is for the sake of piratti (the divine consort), Rama sees no difference in the enemy be it mAreecha in deer disguise or lankAdhipathi rAvana.  Arrows are shot with same vigour.  But not only for the sake of the divine consort as in Ramavatara but also for all the jeevatmas as in trivikramAvatara, He does great tasks continues azhvar.

(mun kuRaluruvAi sendRu muyaNdRu nilam kaikoNdAn) once upon a time, He took the vamanAvatara (divine dwarf) went to mahabali’s yagasala, did extraordinary things like mesmerizing with His divine beauty, attracting with His childish innocent talk, growing from a small vamana to a big trivikrama, measuring the worlds just to get back the property that already belonged to Him. Is there a limit to what He can do to sustain His property with Him! Wonders azhvar in this paasuram recollecting emperuman as the natural means for the jeevatmas to get uplifted.

Paasuram -51

“avanE aruvaraiyal Aniraigal kaththAn
  avanE aNimarudham sAiththAn – avanE
  kalangAp perunagaram kAttuvAn kaNdeer
  elangA purameriththAn eidhu”

aru varaiyAl – With the massive Govardhana hill, incapable of even shaking by anyone;
AniraigaL – cow herds
kAththAn – one who graced and protected;
avanE kaNdeer- That very Lord;
ANimarudham – the two marudha trees that stood very close to each other;
sAiththAn – one who uprooted them also;
avanE kaNdeer – That very Lord;
eidhu – used the arrows;
alangApuram -the Land of Lanka;
eriththAn – burnt into ashes;
avanE – that very emperuman;
kalangAp perunagaram – paramapadam, devoid of any confusions or commotions;
kAttuvAn kaNdeer  - will show it to us!

Introduction

Similar to how he removed the danger of Sri Gajendrazhvan He Himself will remove the hurdles to all the devotees and bless them with the ultimate goal (purushartha), the divine abode, Srivaikuntam.

 Commentary

(aruvaraiyAlAniraigaL kAththAn avanE kaNdeer) With that hill (govardhana), which no one can even try to shake, He lifted, used it as an umbrella and safely protected the cattle and Gokula vasees who were suffering due to the heavy stone like rain showered by Indra.

 (avanE) He alone, The Ekaram shows that he is sarvasakthiyukthan (all powerful), one who doesn’t expect anyone’s support/help.

 (kaNdeer) the day the endangered cattle become capable of protecting themselves, then probably you can also think of taking care of yourself, says azhvar to all those who can think.

(aNimarudham sAiththAn avanE kaNdeer) The two marudha trees that stood very close to each other was uprooted and made to fall down only by Him without anyone else’s help;

 (eidhu elangApuram eriththAn avanE) For the sake of rescuing Sita piratti, one who showered arrows and burnt the city of Lanka to ashes, that which was unconquerable even by the Brahma rudras was won single handedly by Sri Rama.

 (kalangAp perunagaram kAttuvAn kaNdeer) After Rama’s victory, State of Lanka was such that seven asuras had to fight to wear one available dress.  But He will show us that divine abode where there is no hardship or Asuric people.  For those of us who don’t have anything in our hands to get uplifted He alone is the means as He expects nothing from us.

Be it cattle without the sixth sense or a highly intellectual like piratti both were rescued only by perumal.  The very purpose of the knowledge the intellectuals possess is to understand “thattasya sadrusham bhavet” (Ra. SK 39.30) “protecting me is perumal’s duty”

The ignorance of people similar to cattle stops them from stopping perumal from protecting them.

 (avanE kAttuvAN) To see the divine abode, none of our self-efforts will be fruitful.  He alone has to show it to us.

 Again, and again ‘avanE’ (He Himself) is used to stress the point that be it anishtanivritti (removing obstacles) or Ishtaprapti (blessing the good) the 2 sides of the coin protection He alone can do it and we can never accomplish it with our self-efforts.
